Demonstrable Demographics!

All advertisements are different but they all have one objective, which is to catch people’s attention.  Reading through some of my classmate’s blogs I noticed that there are a number of ways the media tries to interest people.  Most of them involved the strategies by using sex, violence, and trying to relate to people’s lives.  These are all very effective strategies that will work in today’s society.  A difference between some ads is how they try to use shock value to get people to notice there advertisement.

In Jessica Znaczko’s blog she said, “The imagination can be a powerful strategy tool, the advertisement invokes the audience’s imagination to create a storyline of what this picture represents.” (http://jessicaznaczko.wordpress.com/2013/11/07/cpcf-1f25-blog-entry-3-what-the-hail/).  Allowing to let other people use their imagination is quite an effective strategy as people like to be able to create their own story to the advertisement.  Jessica used an advertisement from MADD which targets the demographic of people that drink and drive, and people who are in college and university.  Our demographic is seen as fast driving and crazy alcoholics.  Unfortunately not every that is in college or university parties all the time and drives like a maniac.

Another way to spark people’s attention is by using sex in their ads.  In another one of my classmate’s blogs they mentioned, “The obvious message is that if we used this axe product girls will be instantly attracted to you no matter who they are or who you are.” (http://lf13ak.wordpress.com/2013/11/08/what-the-hail/).  Axe is so successful because in their advertisements they use good looking girls and average looking guys.  So it is able to reach out to all guys that think they don’t have a chance with any good looking girl.  When guys see this they think by buying axe’s product they can get any girl they want or it can give them a confidence boost.  My classmate also says, “The axe ad interpellates me as a sex craved party boy and due to the fact that I currently have a bottle of the body wash in my shower proves that I accept this identity.” (http://lf13ak.wordpress.com/2013/11/08/what-the-hail/).  I know that every guy that uses this product isn’t using it to get girls it’s to smell good as what it should be meant for.

Since everyone wants the latest and greatest technology these days it quite easy for the media to show us one simple ad and we are all hooked right away.  In another blog that I read it said, “Now of days, all kids want to do is be able to share what they are doing with everyone as fast as they can.” (http://bradvisser4.wordpress.com/2013/11/07/what-is-hail/).  I think when apple comes out with a new product they target everyone for it.  That’s why they make it so simple to use so no matter how young or old you are, you just have to press one button and you’re on your way.

In the end advertisements over exaggerate on the message that they try to get across.  Thus making the demographic of people that are targeted seem like we are all exactly like those people in the advertisements.
